Swamp Dogg Contemplates the Afterlife is one of those album titles that could only belong to Swamp Dogg. Released on 19 June via S-Curve, the record sounds in concept like a meeting between cosmic soul, gallows humour and a man who has spent decades turning the serious business of life into wonderfully strange music. Swamp Dogg has always been too odd for easy soul history and too soulful for novelty status, which is exactly why he remains interesting. An album about the afterlife could easily become heavy, sentimental or self-important. With Swamp Dogg, you suspect it may instead be funny, tender, weird and occasionally devastating in ways that sneak up on you wearing a ridiculous hat. Mortality is the subject, but personality is the engine. Few artists can make the great beyond sound like both a warning and a party invitation.
