Tara Clerkin Trio make Somewhere Good sound like a soft puzzle from Bristol’s underground

Tara Clerkin Trio’s Somewhere Good is the kind of album that proves subtle music can still be strange. Released on 5 June via World of Echo, the Bristol group’s second album carries traces of trip-hop, folk, pop, jazz and experimental electronics, but it never behaves like a genre exercise. Instead, the songs unspool slowly, letting live instrumentation and odd electronic details blur into a sound that feels homemade, haunted and oddly comforting. Bristol’s musical history inevitably sits in the background, but Tara Clerkin Trio do not simply reenact the darker, smoky version of trip-hop mythology. They make something more autumnal, more delicate and more slippery. Somewhere Good sounds like walking through a familiar city while the buildings quietly rearrange themselves. It is restrained, but not plain; gentle, but full of hidden motion. That is a difficult balance, and they make it feel natural.
